October 2009
It's definitely autumn now and I dare to mention that soon Christmas will be with us and then the New Year. And then – and this is the important part - it will be time for our Annual General Meeting in February. I am flagging this up at this stage as there will be some big changes due – Barbara Harrison will be finishing her chairpersonship (is there such a word?) and there will also be other vacancies as well. Please think about serving on the committee – we do have fun as well as doing the serious stuff.
The Winter UFO (unfinished objects) workshop will be on Saturday 21st November – more details in Dates for your Diary.
A new TV series started on Wednesday 14th October on Sky Channel 171 (mychannel) at 7 pm entitled Talking Threads which you may find interesting if you have Sky.
The Quilters' Guild Annual Conference comes to Southport next year on 26th March till 28th March 2010. There will be talks, workshops, exhibitions, traders, demonstrations, the AGM and much more - including the Gala dinner with prize winning speakers. If you are not a member and you are interested in joining please contact Judy Wilson (01244 317731) or go to the Quilters' Guild website www.quiltersguild.org.uk
Barbara's Challenge – have you started to think about your Alpine themed quilt? I have eaten Toblerones, Lindt truffles, looked at cuckoo clocks and am still waiting for inspiration to arrive. Still, we have until February 2010 so I'm hoping all this chocolate eating will bring results.
Don't forget that the NOVEMBER meeting will be at Burley Memorial Hall in Waverton. The speaker will be Bethan Hughes from Ruthin and her subject is “Words, Music and Quilts”'
On January 20th 2010 we will be having a Four Corners meeting – and the theme is quilting. We are looking for volunteers to do a corner on machine quilting, hand quilting, quilt as you go, quilt patterns etc. You get the idea! Please contact Krysia (01244 314345) if you are happy to share and demonstrate your expertise with members. Thanks!
The Victoria and Albert Museum is holding an exhibition from 20th March - 4th July 2010 “Quilts 1700 – 2010”. It will show British quilts from the V & A collection and national loans. A limited edition range of fabrics will be in the V & A shop featuring designs from the quilts in the exhibition. There's more information on the website – www.vam.ac.uk

September 2009 Well, here we go into the autumn programme for Chester Ps and Qs! I hope you all had a good summer break. Our September meeting is called “What do you know – I wish I'd known that!” and it's all about sharing and expanding our knowledge by questions and answers in an informal setting.
Congratulations are due to those members who received awards at the Festival of Quilts and the Great Northern Quilt Show – well done Susan Briscoe, Maureen Crawford, Barbara Harrison and Gill Young for your successes! You can see the quilts on our website where you can also see the Group Anniversary quilt if you weren't able to visit the shows.
There was a UFO (unfinished objects) workshop at the beginning of September at Burley Hall which was another successful event. Krysia is on the case to sort out further UFO workshops so we should be able to offer one per season – so look out for the Winter UFO.......details available fairly soon.
Barbara's Challenge – what - you may ask - is this? We have been asked if we would like to put on a joint exhibition with a local photographer. His photographs are of Alpine landscapes and so the challenge is for us to provide quilts that will reflect this theme. The maximum is is 24” square (so not too daunting!), it should have 3 layers, have a 4” sleeve and be ready for the meeting on February 17th 2010. So get your creative juices flowing! More news and information will follow about this challenge.
At our October 21st meeting the speaker will be Amanda Hall from Monkey Buttons and is entitled “It's the colours”. The following day sees a workshop run by Amanda where you can make a Jelly Roll Quilt or a Barcelona Bag. Places are available at £20 for the day and you can book a place with Krysia – 01244 314345. For more detail have a look at the Chester Ps and Qs website.

TIP OF THE MONTH
Did you know that your electronic machine is susceptible to cold and can behave badly if subjected to too low a temperature? I learnt this from Rosemary who has a special quilt to keep her machine warm (bless!) in the colder months. So NEVER leave it in the boot of the car overnight once the autumn and winter arrive.

July 2009 The UFO workshop at Waverton was enjoyed by all that attended and Burley Hall was found to be a good venue. Thanks are due to Krysia for organising everything. There will be a Saturday UFO workshop on 5th September – see Dates for your Diary for details. Do come along!
The Linus quilt exhibition in Christleton generated a lot of interest from people who attended the Village Show and the quilts looked great and added a lot of colour to the room. It has inspired some people to attend our meetings and could lead to further showcases for our work. Thanks to Catriona for the organisation of this event. Pics on website.....
I hope you had a chance to visit the Gresford exhibition. They raised just over £5000 which will go to local charities including Nightingale House Hospice in Wrexham. Val Shields would like to thank all Ps and Qs members who visited.
Have you had a look at the Members' Gallery on the website? It's a bit like an electronic Show and Tell...... please contact Sue Horder to get photos of your quilts on the website. Sue will help you with the technical bits involved – ring her on 01244 301716 or contact her through the website. I look forward to seeing YOUR quilts soon!
While on the subject of the website an extra section is to be added soon called Recipes from the Workshops. At our shared lunches we have enjoyed the fruits of the members' other skills and culinary prowess and the recipes will be published for others to enjoy.
DON'T FORGET THAT THERE IS NO MEETING IN AUGUST AND NO AUGUST NEWSLETTER.
Our September meeting will be about sharing and expanding our knowledge by questions and answers. So if you have a question - make a note of it and hopefully all will become clear at the meeting.
Do you remember doing a block for the Group 25th Anniversary Quilt? The quilt has now been assembled and looks great! But there are a number of you who haven't signed the label – and the quilt is going to the NEC at the end of July so please if you are at the July meeting – make sure that you get your name included. Thanks!
